JOHN MCCAIN: HERO OR HEEL?
Have any of you seen today's Daily Mail? Sundays, I like to start the morning by the pool with a Ramos fiz and the news from abroad. I'm out late making the round of cocktail parties the night before, and I've got to drink with these people if I want the scoop. Have to!
Anyway, I was still in my peignoir, waiting for the xanax and the Ramos to kick in when I saw this:
Reminds me of Dotty Parker's quip: "I like my men handsome, ruthless, and stupid."
Well, I don't know if John McCain was as stupid in 1973 as he is in 2008, but he was better looking then--before the ravages of Melanoma. I do love a man in uniform. Any uniform. A 12 dollar an hour EMT can look like a Greek god in a uniform. In any case, here’s John M., just off the plane from a POW camp, looking forward to his first good martini in five years and....
FlashBack circa 1969 : Hubby John is eating rice sauced with cockroaches, while wife Carol, a stunning ex-model, holds down the fort and five kids. Over holiday, motoring to her parent’s, she gets into a God-awful accident, and when the poor thing comes out of a coma, she's 5 inches shorter! I don't know what I'd do, do you?
In any case, near-fatal injuries leave her with a hobble, but worse, she gains forty pounds! Yet she never in five years lets a word of her own personal difficulties get back to John, who still thinks she looks like Heddy Lamaar.
Alright, so here's the dream boat of the POW camp, squatting in some rat- infested Hoochie, saved from self-immolation only by the thought of his Heddy Lamaar back home.
Make a long story short, John does a tell-all for the enemy, renounces America on the airwaves, and they let him go.
Flash forward: John McCain, war hero, a bit thin, but in a uniform nonetheless, watches a strange woman hobbling gamely towards him. He wonders why Heddy Lamaar sent Hattie McDaniels to meet his plane.
You can read the rest for yourselves. I just love British papers, don't you? Got to ring for another Fizz. Just one more to take the edge off.
